It’s very important for your cat to have the right diet to make sure they are getting all the nutritional benefits they can. If you know what to look for and how to read cat food labels, this should be pretty easy for you. The first thing to look for when picking out any kind of food for your cat is that the source of protein is the first thing listed.

Whether you are feeding your cats wet or dry food, make sure it’s not just a bunch of filler. Some people just go with the cheapest to save money and some go with the most expensive figuring it would be the best one. These are two ways to mess up your cats diet. If you have kittens, they need to be on a different diet than your adult cats. There are so many choices out there today for pet food, it can be overwhelming, I know.

Making your own cat food, if you have the time, is a great way to go as well. This way you will know exactly what your cat is consuming and it takes out all of the mystery. You can find tons of recipes for this on the internet, although it is very important you make sure your cat isn’t allergic to the ingredients you use. Talk to your vet about this if you are unsure.

Putting your cat on a eating schedule with measured proportions can cut out cat obesity which can lead to other serious health issues. Many people “free feed” their pets, thinking they are doing them a favor by letting them have full access to food at all times. If it’s there, they will eat it and this is not what you want. If they are starving, they will let you know. It’s up to you to be responsible and take proper care of your pets.

All cats should have the regular vaccinations to live a long and healthy life. If you give them to them as a kitten, you need to wait until they are at least 12 weeks old. After you give them their recommended vaccinations you need to follow up with another series a year later. After that, keep up with them every three years or so.

The recommended vaccinations are Rabies, Feline Leukemia and Feline Distemper. Aside from the usual ones there is also Ringworm, Giardia and Bordatella. These are vaccines you can choose to get if you feel necessary or your vet tells you that you need to. Find a vet and make sure your cat feels comfortable with them and have all of the vaccinations performed at the same vet. This way they know your pet, your pet feels comfortable since the vet can be very stressful for them and they have all of your cats records right there.

Good cat care involves getting your cats regular vaccines and that is part of being a responsible pet owner. Some people think it’s unnecessary but it could save your cats life and it could keep you from having to spend a bunch more money at the vet.

It’s always a good idea to do your own physical check-ups on your cat inbetween vet visits.  This way you can spot anything out of the ordinary or see if they have any wounds or irriations. 

There are a few things that you have to do when it comes to cat care since they can’t do it for themselves…
 

- Some people like to keep their cats inside with supervised outdoor visits, this keeps them out of harms way.  Just like a dog, cats escape too so they should have an ID tag as well.  I prefer the break away collars since cats tend to get caught up on stuff. 

- You need to keep the litter box clean at all times or else they won’t use it… and it’s the sanitary thing to do. 

- Make sure they have access to fresh water at all times and do your research or consult your vet about the right food to feed your cat.

- The more you brush your cat, the less hair in the house and less furballs for your cat.

- Keep toys around the house to keep them active and happy… interacting with your cat will bring you closer and stimulate their minds.

Cats don’t ask for much and they make wonderful companions in return.

I’m sure we will never quite know how it all came about, but whatever took place bringing this breed into the limelight was definitely a good thing as these cats whether they be long haired, or short are very lovely cats. Bobtail cats have been likened to acting like dogs, or having dog like behavior… playing fetch, and greeting their masters at the door (amazingly enough neither my cat or dog greets me when I come home ). Active and very intelligent and oft times being called the Houdini of the cat world by escaping from their homes, closed rooms, and secured cages.

The Bobtail is laid back enough to deal with overly affectionate children often going limp when being handled, so this cat is a great addition to any family. American Bobtails are a fairly slow maturing breed, and if often takes up to three years for them to reach their full potential, but when they do they are a fantastic breed to own both in appearance and personality. The Bobtail is either long haired or short, (with the longer haired variety being rather shaggy in appearance), and in any color combination imaginable, but it seems the “wild” Tabby look is the most popular. The Bobtails stubby tail comes either one third to one half the length of a normal cats tail and is considered a type a cat mutation not unlike the lack of tail in the Manx affecting the tail so it doesn’t develop normally. All around great cat for the feline fancier.
